Draupadi was bathing in river Yamuna. At some distance, a Sadhu was also taking bath. His Langoti, kept on the shore was blown by wind and swept away by water currents. One, that he was wearing, being old was also torn. Sadhu was worried as how to go out naked? He decided to conceal himself behind bushes and go to his hut, when it becomes dark. So he hid behind a bush.
Draupadi saw all this. She went upto the bush, tore one third portion of her Sari and gave it to Sadhu saying “Please take it. You can make two Langotis from this cloth. Rest is sufficient for me. Honour of every person is supreme.” Sadhu gratefully accepted this charity.
Later, when in the court of Duryodhan, Draupadi was being dishonoured, she called God for help. Now God considered if she had some pious deeds in her name, it would be possible to give her in return. When checked, it was found that the piece of cloth given to Sadhu had increased manifold with interest. God gave all that to Draupadi in the form of a Sari to save her honour. Word Devta had come from Daan, i.e. to give to others always. Such persons are called Devta. God has given immense treasure to a person so that tradition of Daan may not stop.
