Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar was just a youth. Since childhood, he had the habit to spend whatever he possessed for the welfare of others. He learnt this habit of giving and helping others from his mother.

Once he came home with a friend and told his mother-“My friend has no money to pay his school fee and so is unable to appear in exams. Can we somehow help him?” His mother immediately took out her Mangalsutra and gave it to the boy. It was mortgaged to pay school fee. Boy appeared in exams and passed. He got back the mortgaged Mangalsutra and placed it on the feet of Vidya Sagar’s mother. Lovingly, she scolded him and said “Son! It is called Mangalsutra and is to be used for Mangal (welfare) activities. You sell it and use the money for further studies.” One must always help the needy.
